Turkish EU Bid Receives Significant Support

This week saw Turkey's European Union bid receive significant support from global leaders and diplomats.

Firstly, the former UN Secretary General Kofi Anna has said that Turkey should be a full member of the Union.

Whilst attending a ceremony in Washington Annan said that Turkey had fulfilled several reforms to join the EU, and it should be a full EU member.

He said there were several problems in the region covering the Middle East and Afghanistan, noting that a country like Turkey, as an important country in the region would be beneficial to the Union.

Turkey always assumed a constructive role in the region, he added.

Further support came from Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves. Turkey has a right to join the EU, Ilves said while speaking at a joint press conference with Turkish President Abdullah Gül.

Europe should considers its future in terms of a global strategy and accept Turkey into the EU, he added.

Turkey has come along way in the decade plus since it stated its intention to join the EU, and a long way even in the few years since negotiations began, but membership would still be beneficial for a number of reasons, says Julian Walker director of Turkish property agent Spot Blue.

"Turkey is a real player in the global economic and even political infrastructure, far bigger than it was when negotiations began. However, in terms of the tourism growth afforded by visa free travel, membership will never be anything but a benefit, even if it is no longer a neccessity," he said.

Spot Blue is currently marketing property in Turkey from as little as £25,000.
