Turkish EU Accession Looks Like Making Some Progress at Last

Share

There has been a lot in the news this week about Turkey's continuing desire to gain full membership to the EU. It is hard to decide which is most notable, but the Spanish Prime Minister's announcement of determination to push the negotiations with Turkey forward is certainly up there. Moratinos, who will take over the rotating EU Presidency in the new year said:

"I hope we can fulfil our obligations to open new chapters to negotiation and make progress in negotiations."

This is not the first EU president to be pro-Turkish accession, but Moratinos may be the most strongly pro-expansionism and pro-Turkish accession for some time, said Julian Walker, director of UK based Turkish property agent Spot Blue, he said:

"Of course Moratinos isn't the first upcoming or current EU president to indicate support for Turkey's EU bid. In fact the outgoing Swedish PM is pretty pro-Turkey. The trouble is, Swedish PM Fredrik Reinfeldt had no real passion either way. We get the feeling Moratinos is different; that he really means it when he says he wants to push the debate forward and get some more chapters opened -- maybe it's the Spanish red-bloodedness."

Spot Blue is one of the most reputable, knowledgeable and best known UK agents of Turkish property, with Turkey properties for sale from £25k.

Speaking of new chapters; EU officials have agreed to give the go-ahead for the opening of talks on the environment chapter of Turkey's accession negotiations. It's a small step but any progress is just that.

The permanent representatives of the EU member countries agreed late on Thursday to open talks on the environment chapter on Monday during a Turkish-EU intergovernmental conference. This brings the number of chapters opened for accession talks to 12 out of 35.
