Arab World Big-Hitters to Recognise Kosovo's Independence

Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and Yemen are to recognise Kosovo, Naim Tërnava, leader of the Islamic Community of Kosovo, has told daily newspaper Koha Ditore.

Tërnava did not say if the recognitions would come during Ramadan the Muslim holy festival ending September 19, just that he knew that the recognitions would happen "soon".

So far 62 countries have recognised as an independent state, since it unilaterally declared itself such last year.

The move has been fought hard by Serbia, Kosovo's former governing state, who says their declaration is against international law and have successfully requested a ruling on the matter by the International Court of Justice.

Popular support for Kosovo's independence includes that of France, Great Britain and America, while states with their own disputed zone are harshly against it, including Spain, Russia and China.

Like so many things in world affairs, countries are tending to recognise Kosovo or not based on their own agendas, and these Arab states are no different; popular support for Kosovo's independence could signal the same would be true if the Palestinian's made a similar declaration.
